Educational books and school textbooks always need to be well illustrated in order to both inform a child and hold their attention.
It’s important to feature a strong human element in all subject areas.
Freelance illustrator, Richard Deverell has worked for many of the top UK educational publishing houses including Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Macmillans, Longmans, Harper Collins, Usborne and Hodder and Stoughton. The commissions have been very varied. Sometimes a publisher will want one or more large, detailed illustrations. Most of Richard’s work has been for publications needing a series of small pictures, like these for Letts Key Stage 1 English and Mathematics workbooks. The dinosaurs were for a giant classroom poster series for Macmillan – one of three that he drew. All these commissions were coloured digitally. Oxford University Press wanted several illustrations for key stage 3 geography books. As they finished up on the page no bigger than a few rows of postage stamps, the detail was simply and skilfully drawn.
